YOU CAN ACTUALLY MAKE A LIVING WITH THIS CREATIVE INTERNSHIP
The starving artist concept is as much trope as it is truth. Art doesn’t always pay and all too often the non-creative types ignobly hire freelancers with a cartoonish rate of “exposure instead of money.” You just have to be crafty to stay artsy some days, whether you’re a musician, a painter, a writer, or a dancer. But there are surely moments when the big leagues want you to be their creator and, more importantly, they want to help you do so on your terms. At least that’s what Ogilvy & Mather Group UK seems to be doing with The Pipe.
Curiously named, The Pipe is the advertising agency’s six-month creative internship program that’s gained notoriety for paying quite squarely, as their Chief Creative Officer Emma de La Fosse explains.
“The reason we’re paying the London Living Wage is not just because it’s the right thing to do, but we also want to include everyone. We want the ones who wouldn’t normally apply for this sort of thing. The ones who can’t afford the time off work nor rely on mum and dad to help them out.”
That London Living Wage she mentions is £9.40 an hour. Put that against the current UK Living Wage of £8.25 an hour or the national minimum wage of £6.70 (for 21-24-year-olds) or £7.20 (for those 25 and older) and you can see why the angle’s so beloved—plus, hey, London. The team behind The Pipe doesn’t want your prepared formalities, as noted by their program’s pitch.
You don’t need a degree. You don’t need any experience. You don’t even have to know what an ad agency is. We just want you to show us how creative you are.
You’re pumped, right? Well, it also helps that their posters for The Pipe are bitchin’.
